music review: MUSIC REVIEW-Neck - Come Out Fighting |
Neck - Come Out Fighting Come Out Fighting is the latest release from Neck, the London- Irish 'psycho-ceilidh' band who play an energetic fusion of traditional irish music and punk. They have been playing their blend of celtic punk for over 9 years and have been described as the bastard love child of Shane Magowan and Joe Strummer. Vocalist Leeson O' Keeffe is actually a former member of Shane Magowan and The Popes. Neck's influences are obvious but they have a sound which is very much their own, which they describe as 'the fave neck 'now-you're-moshing-now-you're-riverdancing-now-you're-moshing-again!' trick'. Come Out Fighting is Neck's third album, although it is their first released on Golf Records. It is excellently produced by legendary producer Pat Collier, originally in the Vibrators, who has a fantasic track record. Come out Fighting is a powerful mixture of traditional irish songs such as the covers of McAlpines Fusiliers and The Star of County Down, ballads such as The Homes of Donegal and my favourite on the album, I'll Still Be Blue Over You. There are also rabble rousers like the anti-racist number Everbody's Welcome to the Hooley, which charted in the UK in 2006 (I love the reel in the middle!) and another rouser is Hello Jakey. Another couple of songs that really stand out for me are Tink and Ourselves Alone. The CD is well presented and the lyric booklet is interesting reading in that it explains the meaning of some of the words they have chosen and also has historical and geographical info relevant to their songs. All in all, this is a really good listen and if you're a fan of irish inspired punk like the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly then this is a must. Neck have numerous gig and festival dates lined up so check out their myspace to find out where you can catch their energetic folk-punk live. http://www.myspace.com/neckireland 4 out of 5 Jeanna
