Fat Bloke Thin Book - Arturo Bassick Fat bloke thin book is the self published biography of Arturo Bassick of the Lurkers and 999 and it is a cracking good read. It is a really comfortable and easy to get on with type of book that I found hard to put down and I finished it within a couple of days. Arturo is a natural born story teller and has a talent for telling things as they were/are. His biography begins with an account of his early childhood in London; his family, where they lived, how they lived and how he felt. He has a no holds barred, honest style of writing that is interspersed with humour throughout as he shares his past. He has lots of anecdotes from over the years to recount, some of my favourites being his appearance in a Shampoo video and a hilarious encounter with Sting. He tells of the music he grew up with and was influenced by before moving onto punk, sharing his memories of the time, gigs, bands, people, fashion and how he personally became involved in playing in bands. As well as sharing memories of life in The Lurkers in the late 70s and back full circle to today he also talks about the other bands he has played in such as Pinpoint, 999 and The Business as well as bands he has promoted, such as Splodgenessabounds, all of which makes really humerous, interesting and informative reading. I love all his stories about touring, this man certainly has some good stories to tell! As well as music related stuff we find out lots about the man himself and his views and observations of society. I enjoyed reading about his love of shire horses and something close to my own heart, retired greyhounds. He has, as I have also had, retired greyhounds as pets and feels very strongly about their welfare. Arturo includes some of his poetry and lyrics, photographs, lots of press clippings and reviews as well as gig flyers and adverts which he has obviously collected over the years. There is also a discography and some lists of some of his favourite things. This book comes highly recommended. Arturo has written it from the heart and it is a really enjoyable read! It can be purchased by mailorder, or at any of his gigs. The price is £7.50 plus £1.00 p & p, to the States it will be a little more, so please e-mail arturob@live.co.uk for a price or more information. In Arturo's words 'All copies will be autographed, so get your orders in now!'
